Computing a Maximal Independent Set Using Beeps
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider the problem of finding a maximal independent set (MIS) in the discrete beeping model introduced in DISC 2010. At each time, a node in the network can either beep (i.e., emit a signal) or be silent. Silent nodes can only differentiate between no neighbor beeping, or at least one neighbor beeping. This basic communication model relies only on carrier-sensing. Furthermore, we assume nothing about the underlying communication graph and allow nodes to wake up (and crash) arbitrarily. We show that if a polynomial upper bound on the size of the network n is known, then with high probability every node becomes stable inO(log n) time after it is woken up. To contrast this, we establish a polynomial lower bound when no a priori upper bound on the network size is known. This holds even in the much stronger model of local message broadcast with collision detection. Finally, if we assume nodes have access to synchronized clocks or we consider a somewhat restricted wake up, we can solve the MIS problem in O(log n) time without requiring an upper bound on the size of the network, thereby achieving the same bit complexity as Luby’s MIS algorithm. ∗[email protected], Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) †[email protected], Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ‡[email protected], University of Lugano (USI), Switzerland 1 ar X iv :1 10 8. 19 26 v1 [ cs .D C ] 9 A ug 2 01 1

Global Forcing Number for Maximal Matchings under Graph Operations
Let $S= \{e_1,\,e_2, \ldots,\,e_m\}$ be an ordered subset of edges of a connected graph $G$. The edge $S$-representation of an edge set $M\subseteq E(G)$ with respect to $S$ is the vector $r_e(M|S) = (d_1,\,d_2,\ldots,\,d_m)$, where $d_i=1$ if $e_i\in M$ and $d_i=0$ otherwise, for each $i\in\{1,\ldots , k\}$. We say $S$ is a global forcing set for maximal matchings of $G$ if $...
متن کاملDesign Patterns in Beeping Algorithms: Examples, Emulation, and Analysis
We consider networks of processes which interact with beeps. In the basic model defined by Cornejo and Kuhn (2010), processes can choose in each round either to beep or to listen. Those who beep are unable to detect simultaneous beeps. Those who listen can only distinguish between silence and the presence of at least one beep. We refer to this model as BL (beep or listen). Stronger models exist...
متن کاملParallel Algorithms for Maximal Independent Set and Maximal Matching
We present a derandomization process which leads to efficient parallel algorithms for the maximal independent set and maximal matching problems. The derandomization of the general pairs PROFIT/COST problem depends on the derandomization of the bit pairs PROFIT/COST problem which follows Luby’s approach of using an O(n) sized sample space. This simplifies the approach presented in [16].
متن کاملAn Eecient Parallel Algorithm for Computing a Maximal Independent Set in a Hypergraph of Dimension 3
The paper considers the problem of computing a maximal independent set in a hypergraph (see 3] and 7]). We present an eecient deterministic NC algorithm for nding a maximal independent set in a hypergraph of dimension 3: the algorithm runs in time O(log 4 n) time on n + m processors of an EREW PRAM and is optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor. Our algorithm adapts the technique of Goldberg and...
متن کاملBeeping a Maximal Independent Set Fast
We adapt a recent algorithm by Ghaffari [7] for computing a Maximal Independent Set in the Local model, so that it works in the significantly weaker Beep model. For networks with maximum degree ∆, our algorithm terminates locally within time O((log∆+log(1/ε)) · log(1/ε)), with probability at least 1− ε. The key idea of the modification is to replace explicit messages about transmission probabil...
